Where from, how much and why, do people give Jesus authority? In the last few weeks there has been a convergence of Bible verses that seem to be startlingly obvious, yet, I never put them together before.
These include …
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. (NIV)
Jesus refused to accept authority offered to Him, because He knew better. He knew God’s Word, mind and future. Satan did have authority to offer. He received it from us. We chose Satan’s lies over God’s truth.
27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created the male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” (NIV)
Mankind had been given authority over the earth. But, lost it to Satan through the Fall, which was simply rejection of God’s authority over us.
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (NIV)
Jesus recovered our Authority through His sacrifice. He has shared it with us, for one purpose; to reach others.
7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. 8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” (NIV)
Jesus had previously been offered the nations (authority), with only one obligation. He had to request it from the Father. He had to be willing to pay the price. Which was death, for our Sin. Satan offered him an easy way out for the man Jesus, A painless one. But, God Jesus was willing to die and not willing to bow to Satan.
26 To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations— 27 that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery’—just as I have received authority from my Father. (NIV)
We are called to use Jesus’ authority to reach others for Him. We have the God given authority, to use, to draw others to Him. And for those who stick by Him until the end, they/we will be given back the authority that our ancestors Adam & Eve gave away.
What an incredible link through God’s Word. We can follow the sequence of events and see that Satan has lost that authority, ever since Jesus willingly asked for it back and paid the heavy price. Satan is a liar and tries to confuse us into believing he is still in control. He becomes more frantic as the years go by. But, Christ calls us to Him and His authority. The moment we accept Jesus’ freely offered salvation, we have access to His power and authority.
Whose authority is it? In your life? Let the Truth set you free. God bless.
